Driving Instructor Franchise with Surepass
A driving instructor franchise is a legal agreement to operate a driving school business under the brand name of the franchise and to receive other benefits as a franchisee. The main benefits of the Surepass franchise include marketing your business online, guaranteed number of pupils every year and a system to ensure your success as a driving instructor.
You benefit from our decades of experience in driver training while retaining the freedom of running your own driving school.
Surepass offers instructor franchises across the UK, allowing you to tap into our strong, respected brand and take advantage of the stream of learner drivers provided to you.
How Do You Qualify To Join The Surepass Driving School Franchise?
A qualified driving instructor that holds the PDI or ADI is qualified to join the Surepass Driving School franchise. For those not yet registered as an ADI or PDI, we provide comprehensive training and support. We also refund the course fees when you become a Surepass franchisee.
Is There A High Demand for Driving Instructors - How Many Are There, And How Many People Learning?
Yes, the data indicates driving instructor numbers are in decline while demand is projected to increase due to a high number of children born in the early 2000’s. Here is the data to support this:
Driving Instructor Numbers 2013-2023
Data source: Department for Transport
Number of instructors in 2013: 44,569
Number of instructors in June 2023: 39,789
This is a 12% drop in driving instructor numbers between 2013 and early 2020, dropping from over 44,500 to under 40,000.
Learners and Exam Numbers 2020 Onwards
At the same time, according to insurance experts Marmalade, there was a boom in births in 2003, up from 30,000 to 100,000. This means that in 2020, 70,000 additional potential drivers came of age for lessons. This coincided with the COVID-19 epidemic, when driving examination centres closed for health reasons. In 2022, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) official statistics show that 1.67 million driving tests were taken during 2022.
This set of circumstances has created a backlog of demand for driving lessons and driving tests. It’s a real boom-time for instructors.
How Much Do Driving Instructors Earn?
Taking a Surepass Driving School franchise means that you can earn from around £44,000 to £50,000 gross* per year whilst being your own boss.
Unlike most driving schools that claim to offer their affiliated instructors “unlimited” pupils, Surepass has franchise packages that provide no less than 100 pupils to teach per year. According to the DVSA, a learner driver requires 47 hours of professional teaching plus 20 hours of private teaching before obtaining their licence.
To fill your diary there is a balance to strike between price and being fully booked. Surepass sets competitive lesson prices to fill your diary quickly and keep it full. Take a look at your earnings potential as a Surepass Driving Instructor in the table below:
Hours Worked | 50 | 45 | 40 | 35 | 30 | 25 | 20 | 15 | 10 |

How Do You Qualify as a Driving Instructor?
If you are interested in joining the driving school franchise but have not yet qualified as a driving instructor, the first step is to understand what’s involved.
Do You Need Qualifications to Become A Driving Instructor?
There are no academic requirements to become a driving instructor. You will need a reasonably clean driving licence, a clean DBS check to show you’re safe to work with the general public and a willingness to learn.
How Long Does It Take To Qualify As A Driving Instructor?
Theoretically it is possible in as little as 12 weeks, but realistically it takes most people somewhere between 6 months and a year to learn and pass the driving instructor exams.
What Are The Exams To Become A Driving Instructor?
There are 3 exams to become a driving instructor, as follows:
- Part 1: Theory Test – taken indoors, this exam is a multiple choice questionnaire and a section to show that you can recognise potential hazards as they develop in videos of driving situations.
- Part 2: Driving Ability Test – taken while driving a car with an examiner, this tests your driving skills at a more advanced level than the normal driving test.
- Part 3: Teaching Test – taken while running a driving lesson with a pupil behind the wheel of the car for most of the time. There will be an examiner looking for evidence that you have planned the lesson and that you teach safely and effectively.
